Celebrating the life of

Jayne Malcom Ducey

October 17, 1936 - August 21, 2023

Jayne Malcom Ducey

Jayne Malcom Ducey, 86, of Savannah, Georgia passed away peacefully Monday evening, August 21, 2023 at Summer Breeze with her family keeping vigil by her side. She fought a brave battle with cancer under Hospice care for the last two months.

Jayne was born in 1936 in Social Circle, Georgia. She was the daughter of Archie Preston Malcom and Sarah Rebecca "Becky" Adams Malcom of Social Circle, and after her father's death, step-daughter of Dr. M. W. Anderson.

Jayne was a 1954 graduate of Social Circle High School where she participated fully in all activities. She was captain of the basketball team and class president. She attended Middle Georgia College for her first two years of higher education and played on the basketball team her freshman year, choosing to work her sophomore year. Jayne then attended the University of Georgia and graduated in 1958 with a degree in Education.

During Jayne's high school and college years, she dated, at different times, four young men. They were all named Jimmy! In 1959, she married the last one, deciding that James "Jimmy" Emmett Ducey was the one to settle down with and raise a family. She moved to Savannah and began teaching at Charles Herty Elementary School.

After the couple wed at St. Anna's Catholic Church in Monroe, Georgia, the couple spent there honeymoon in New Orleans on their way to Fort Hood, Texas where Dr. Ducey was serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army as a veterinarian. The couple returned to Savannah where they began a family of five children.

Jayne kept a full calendar. Early on she was an avid Bridge player, and with Jimmy she joined a square dancing group. She began working by her husband's side managing his practice and attending their children's ballgames and dance recitals. She retired at the age of 65 and continued to stay active in her church and with memberships in the Catholic Council of Women at St. Peter the Apostle and the Daughters of Ireland. She volunteered her time taking church flowers to those in assisted living.

Jayne always had a smile on her face! Those that brought the biggest smiles were her 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She forever became "GanGan" when her first grandson gave that pronunciation to grandmother. She began her second run in life attending once again, with much joy and pride, ballgames, recitals, school events, and anything else her grandchildren participated in. She was their biggest cheerleader. Their love for her and their visits are what kept her fighting for more days to spend with them.
Jayne had a big heart, was a friend to everyone, and had a smile for everyone. She dearly loved her brothers and their families. Their time spent together was so precious to them, and the stories they would tell of growing up in a small town brought joy to them all. Their tenderness towards each other was very touching to witness.

Of all of Jayne's accomplishments, her greatest was kindness. That kindness was reciprocated and exemplified by her personal care aide and friend, Felisha. Jayne's face would light up when Felisha arrived; she knew she was in good hands.

Jayne was preceded in death by her husband, James Emmett Ducey D.V.M., her aforementioned parents, her older brother Henry Ray Malcom, her sister-in-law Helen Lanford Malcom, nieces McKenzie Blythe Malcom and Patti Ducey.

She is survived by her children and their spouses: James Emmett "Scooter" Ducey, Jr. (Stephanie), Karla Ducey Hughes (Jon), Clifford Malcom Ducey (Leslie), Jeffry Ellington Ducey (Cheryl), and Erin Ducey Thompson (Trey). Her grandchildren: Patrick (Kaitlin) Hughes, Mike Hughes, Keely Hughes, Mary Grace Ducey, Kate Hughes, Garrett Ducey, Ryan Ducey, Will Ducey, Marie Ducey, Macy Thompson, Reagan Ducey, Brooke Thompson, and Ross Ducey; 2 great-grandchildren: Declan James Hughes and Hayden Suzanne Hughes. Her brothers: Joseph Adams Malcom (Christa) and Archie Preston Malcom, Jr. (Deere); sister-in-law Carol A. Malcom; nieces Margaret Andrews, Betsy Crumley, Susan Tripp, Britton Malcom, and Barbara Anne Weaver; nephews: Archie Malcom, Ray Malcom Jr., Joshua and Addison Malcom, Robbie, Ricky, Tony, Freddy, Tommy, and Pat Ducey.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations made to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Mrs. Ducey’s name for the St. Peter the Apostle Church Organ Fund, or the charity of your choice.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2023 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island followed by a Rosary service at 6:00 p.m.
